Frequently Asked Questions About My Work and Services

When did you start restoring and making clocks? When did this interest start? Where did you study and apprentice under? Phew! So many questions.....
  1. Attended Rochdale art college,Lancs,UK. 1967 first kindled my interest in antiques.
  2. Apprentice clock repairer 1968. First handled french clocks.
  3. 1st yr apprentice toolmaker, made 1st skeleton clock,1969.
  4. Attended B.H.I clock/watch course at Openshaw ,Manchester, UK.went on to qualify C.M.B.H.I.
  5. West Dean antique clock restoration course in Sussex, UK. under Ronald Hoad.qualified B.A.D.A. dip.
  6. Attended Sheridan Craft and Design Program,Ontario,Canada. Craft and Design glass graduate.
What clocks do you like to work on?
I like to work on early English / French clocks and precision clocks. I also specialise in musical clocks.

Have you worked on any really special (old/ rare) clocks or mechanisms?
Yes,Rennaisance astronomical clocks of Strasburg and Augsburg.
Also Early Breguet, Arnold, and Earnshaw chronometers.

Are there any particular techniques for restoration you would call your speciality? How do you source your parts?
My specialities are early verge reconversions and 1/4 pull repeat replacement as well as hand engraving work on clock dials. Most part are handmade by me.

Describe the sort of process you go through to fully restore a clients work?
The clock is discussed with the owner as to the type of restoration/conservation required, for instance, some clients want things to look old and work, others want it restored back to how it looked when it left the clockmakers shop. Money available and schedule of work is discussed. Major rebuilds can take many months.

Do you do house calls for grandfather clocks or especially delicate pieces?
I am happy to do any house calls and spend time with the customer as necessary.

Do you offer a guarantee? 
All  my restoration work is guaranteed for 2 yrs.
My new clocks are guaranteed for the life of the 1st owner.

I have seen your glass work/ clock sculptures and love them. Do you sell them or do commission work?
Yes I sell my glass clocks. As I complete this website more pictures of these clocks will appear in the main gallery.
